Kathleen Phair Barnard, a partner, has since 1988 devoted her law practice to representing labor unions in all aspects of collective bargaining and litigation and individual employees in employment discrimination and civil rights cases. She has particularly strong experience in strike-related matters, has fought subcontracting before federal and state agencies and courts and has won noteworthy judgments and settlements for individual employees in civil rights cases. She has extensive experience in appellate work for labor and employment clients and on behalf of organizations appearing as friends of the court in significant employment and labor cases.
Ms. Barnard is a former member of the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee's National Board of Directors and remains an active member of that organization. She is the Chair of the Northwest Women's Law Center's Legal Committee, on which she has served for 11 years. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Washington Employment Lawyers Association and is an active member of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, the National Employment Lawyers Associations and the Washington State and King County Bar Associations' Labor and Employment Sections. She frequently writes and lectures on labor and employment matters.
Ms. Barnard received her undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Montana. She received her law degree from that same university in 1985, where she was an Erasmus Scholar and received the Judge Jamison Award for Academic Excellence. Following law school, Ms. Barnard clerked for Justice William Hunt of the Montana Supreme Court and for Judges Young and Van Hoomissen of the Oregon Court of Appeals. She joined the firm in 1988.
