The United States Department of Labor fosters and promotes the welfare
of the job seekers, wage earners, and retirees of the United States by
improving their working conditions, advancing their opportunities for
profitable employment, protecting their retirement and health care benefits,
helping employers find workers, strengthening free collective bargaining,
and tracking changes in employment, prices, and other national economic
measurements. In carrying out this mission, the Department administers
a variety of Federal labor laws, including those that guarantee workers'
rights to safe and healthful working conditions, a minimum hourly wage
and overtime pay, freedom from employment discrimination, unemployment
insurance, and other income support.

Washington State Department of Labor and Industries is dedicated to the
safety, health, and security of Washington's workers. L&I's Division
of Occupational Safety and Health administers the Washington Industrial
Safety and Health Act by developing and enforcing rules that protect workers
from hazardous job conditions. L&I also conducts research into workplace
health and safety. L&I also administers the state workers' compensation
system, providing benefits to workers who are injured or become ill on
the job. L&I enforces state laws protecting workers' wages, hours,
breaks, and the state's child labor laws, as well as laws that protect
workers' wages and working conditions. L&I oversees apprenticeship
programs and administers rules covering prevailing wage on public-works
construction projects. L&I licenses electricians, certifies plumbers,
and registers construction contractors, requiring them to be insured and bonded.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible
for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against
a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion,
sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability
or genetic information.

The Washington State Human Rights Commission enforces the Law Against Discrimination
(RCW 49.60). The Commission works to prevent and eliminate discrimination
by investigating civil rights complaints and providing education and training
opportunities throughout the state.

The Washington Employment Lawyers Association's mission is to enforce and
advance employee rights, in recognition that employment with dignity and
fairness is fundamental to the quality of life. WELA does this by promoting
and increasing public awareness of the rights of individual employees;
enhancing the quality of legal representation of employees; advocating
for employee rights before courts and legislative bodies; and assisting
and supporting members in their practice of plaintiffs' employment law.
WELA comprises attorneys, law professors, paralegals, and law students
devoted to the promotion of employee rights.
